About Exceptional Haven Inc

We are a small nonprofit founded by Laura Johnson, a special education teacher and private tutor, in order to make a difference in helping with the special education crisis. Currently, many special education positions are unstaffed, and the US rate of students with special -needs (on IEPs) is 18%. In Brevard County, Florida, where she lives, the rate is over 25%. Exceptional Haven began by working with after-school programs serving under-resourced children with special needs in Brevard County. As part of our pilot program, we provided sensory kits and free tutoring to students during fall quarter, 2025, and we helped 46% of them reach grade level.

We hire only expert teachers, credentialled teachers with master's degrees, to work with students in our program. Our Board is composed of people with a passion for serving for the welfare of children, including a day care founder and a children's pastor. We also provide tutoring at reasonable cost or on a sliding-scale basis to families who are able to afford it. We take part of our income from paid tutoring to subsidize our free tutoring program. ​
